Types of Flutes

The flute is considered one of the oldest man-made musical instruments. In 1995, archaeologists found in Eastern Europe a flute made of bone that dates back some 43,000 to 80,000 years old. Flutes are divided into two main categories:
Side-blown - Also known as a transverse flute, you hold it horizontally or sideways to play.

End-blown - It is played by blowing the end of a tube or pipe. End-blown flutes have two sub-categories:

Parts of the Flute

The flute is often used in jazz and pop music, it has the highest voice in the woodwind family of instruments. This may be a bit confusing since not all flutes are made of wood. But due to the way a flute produces sound and its construction, the flute is rated among the woodwinds.
The flute is also a very versatile musical instrument, it can play solo or be responsible for carrying the melody.

If you are thinking of taking up flute playing, you must be well aware of the different parts of the flute and their specific function.

Putting together a Flute

There are three sections to a silver flute. There is the head joint: this is where you will blow to make a sound. There is the middle joint: this is where the majority of your fingers will be, and is the largest section. Finally, there is the foot joint: the shorter of the pieces that goes on the end.

First take the head joint and connect it with the middle joint. Make sure you are careful when putting it in, you don't want to damage any keys or pads. Some flutes have a tight fit and others have a loose fit. Never force your flute togeather, if it is sticking, then clean the ends of the two pieces with a rag. You will want to line up the embouchure hole with the keys. Notice in the picture how it is lined up.

Next you will want to line up the foot joint with the middle joint. Just like above, make sure that you are careful when putting this piece in, you don't want to damage anything. You want to line up the pinky key (first button on the flute) with the keys on the middle joint. The round keys on the end will be turned toward you just a little. Depending on how long your fingers are, this could also be rolled out quite a bit.

When you are done it should look like this:

Bb Shake Key

I Playing around on my flute I learned that it is just another way of playing Bb. In jazz band I used it a few times just for fun, because I found that it is a quicker than the other methods. Little did I know, it was there for a reason.

This key is used with your right first finger. Unlike all the other keys on the flute, this key is not meant to be played by the tip of your finger. Instead it is meant to be played at your middle knuckle. This is a much faster way of playing a passage like:

When playing this passage from the G#, A#, B, it is much quicker to use the Bb shake key, because you can hit it and continue on. You can use it anywhere you have this combination. It is also helpful from trilling A# to B.

Now for the technical part of it.

Method #1 - When pressing the right hand, first finger button, you also press down 2 other keys. By having those other keys close down, this takes up more time.

Method #2 - The Thumb Bb key is a heavy and large button to press. This also takes more time to play.

Method #3 - This is the quickest way of playing Bb. When you press the shake key, only one padded key goes down. Try playing it quickly, or trilling from Bb to B, using all three methods.

The Best Way to Learn to Play the Piano

Classical Piano Lessons

Common perception about classical piano playing is that improvisation and sight-reading are not related to one another. Often the thought is sight reading piano players can not improvise and vise versa. When one can perform both skills perfectly this statement proves to be false.

To be a successful classical piano player you will need both skills. Classical music will often not afford a piano player the luxury of having a set of sheet music placed in front of them. In preparation for playing classical piano music a player will find there is not enough room for a musical stand and accompanying sheet music. At this point, a piano player must improvise. Likewise having sheet music placed in front of you moments before you are to play requires the ability to sight read.

Classical piano lessons teach students how to handle both situations. In addition, the lessons expand on current musical selections while adding new ones at a student’s pace level. Practice drills in classical piano lessons go a long way towards enhancing fundamental skills.

Start by breaking down the component notes of chords found on a piece of sheet music. This can take
place while you are playing a particular set of music or as you are studying it beforehand. Next change chords by converting a major chord into a minor chord and vise versa.

Try this technique on the first few measures of Fur Elise. Take the A minor and E major chords and interchange their appearances in the song. This creates a whole new feel to an old favorite song. Classical music piano lessons will teach the technique of memorizing the underlying chords in a song. In classical music there are recognizable scale progressions on the chords.

Learn the initial lines of a song and the accompanying chords that go with that song. Now you have a visual memory bank of chords that exist in a song. Take those visual representations and create a whole new flair to the song. Not only will this make a classical piano song your own but it will make distinct changes to traditional classical music. This will not be hard to do as melodic phrases and chord progressions are readily available in classical piano music.

The next step is to experiment with music scales you wish to make a part of classical piano songs. This is a great chance to polish scale playing abilities learning in a classical piano lesson. In addition to practicing scale play, you will also be able to play with melodies and chords to see which work for your personal classical piano playing style. Do not forget to observe the arpeggio sections of the music as well.

Classical piano lessons teach finger dexterity. With enough practice of playing scales at higher speeds each time, you will start to develop an ability to play without thinking. Your fingers will naturally find the right chord positions. Take a look at the various components of music, scales, chords and key melody. These fundamental building blocks of classical piano lessons will go a long way towards your classical piano career.

Learning To Play Piano Quickly

Many different people want to start learning how to play the piano, because they think of it as a beautiful instrument that requires diligence and skill to become proficient at playing. This is definitely true. Playing the piano is something that can potentially be a lifelong hobby. Many people pick it up at a young age. Lots of children probably recall piano lessons that their parents forced onto them, to mixed enthusiasm. Some people, unfortunately, believe that the piano is a simple instrument to play and that they can quickly learn how to play well. Partially true – the piano can be easily learned, but it’s much more difficult to master.

Can someone learn to play the piano quickly? Well, it depends on individual things – your own willingness to learn most importantly. Everyday diligent practice is required before you can really gain skill in playing the piano. A solid training regimen generally includes a warm up, scale practice, techniques for fingering and a good session of sight reading written music. All of these are necessary components for your musical education to be well-rounded. Generally, practice at least half an hour to an hour every day to get the most effect from your sessions – more can work, but don’t overdo it and burn yourself out. This is another reason people give up practicing piano – they burn themselves out and simply get tired of doing it every day, when they feel like they could be doing something else that’s more tangible.

Ten minutes or so of your session should be given to warming up to get your hands and fingers accustomed to the simple physical act of playing the piano. Start out slowly with a few scales to get your hands and fingers warmed up properly. Different kinds of scales would be best, both major and minor. Experiment with assorted scale patterns by shifting key signature, and learn the associated chords.

To learn how to find given notes on a piano without having to hunt, fingering techniques are useful. Basically, fingering techniques are learning how to find notes in relation to the black piano keys. After learning these patterns, you can easily pick out any note on the keyboard without needing to look. Especially when you start playing at a faster tempo, this is an important skill. Think of it like typing on a computer keyboard. You can type much faster if you aren’t needing to always seek out the correct key and can instead shift over to it.

Practicing your major and minor scales will increase knowledge in musical theory related to tone, and you can also use these different scales to understand how accidentals affect music. Major scales are used during songs with a lighthearted and happy feel, but minor scales are used mostly in songs that are meant to be darker and more subdued. It’s easy to switch from a major scale to a minor one - just lower the third interval a half step. No matter what accidentals you have originally, this will work.

Piano Playing Fundamentals

If you want to learn to play piano, there are many ways to do it, by looking for a piano teacher, finding a piano DVD or online piano lessons course, or teaching yourself piano by learning by ear. Any way you choose to learn to play piano will have a generally set path for your learning, and this would apply for any instrument. Some of what you’ll need to learn are proper hand positions, posture, musical theory, the note alphabet and how scales and chords work. These are all necessary to any music education, especially the piano. The piano is an exacting instrument, given how it’s built, so gaining skill in playing it takes a while.

When you first start learning to play piano, the keys may look confusing. They’re simple to learn though, if hard to master. The white keys are normal notes, and the black keys are accidentals in between the normal notes. Unless a piece calls for it, you won’t use the black keys a lot. You first need to become comfortable with the piano before you really start to learn the methods of playing. Proper posture should be learned first; lean slightly into the piano. Also you should learn proper hand positioning, ie all muscles relaxed and your fingers somewhat curled in. Move your thumbs inward toward the palm so they’ll line up with the rest of your fingers, so you can play notes with your thumb without having to worry about striking nearby keys.

A few basic scales are next on your learning agenda. Starting on a white key immediately before two black ones, play along the white keys with your right thumb, right index, and right middle finger. The next five notes of the scale are the same and you’ll play back down them in a mirror image of this progression. Move your thumb underneath your middle finger when you transition your hand, or ‘walk’ along the keyboard.

You can easily start playing a scale one-handed this way. Learning how to play the piano is best done at first without sheet music, so try learning TV show themes. If you know one note, you can figure out the rest of the notes by working your way along the keyboard slowly to get to the proper intervals. Learning by ear is often done this way.

First, to learn a song by ear, play its first note as middle C, even though it may or may not be that actual note. That doesn’t matter for right now, you’re mainly focused on getting proper intervals. Like said above, go with trial and error to learn the song, and when you’ve got it learned you can transpose it to its proper key.

Of course, you’ll learn sheet music later on in your musical education. It gets to be almost second nature even if it’s a little frightening at first. Once you start learning how to read sheet music, you’re getting better at playing the piano, and then you have to learn to read and play at the same time, or sight-read.

Self Instruction in Piano

The piano is a musical instrument that most people think is hard to learn at first, but it’s valuable nonetheless regardless of how much time, money and effort you invest. Start as soon as possible teaching yourself piano – the earlier you start the better, and also you can play a favourite song to impress your acquaintances. There are a few things you need to figure out before you start out playing piano.

First, decide what genre of music you want to learn, or what area you mean to concentrate, and whether you want to perform or play privately. Playing in public concerts/recitals is a little different than just playing for your own pleasure. If you decide to mainly focus on playing precomposed pieces, such as Mozart’s, you’ll need to teach yourself how to read sheet music and seek out formal training to improve and refine your technique. If, however, you just want to accompany a singer, you can get by with just learning chords, which is a great deal easier than learning entire melodies.

There are different genres of music, each having different styles and rules. Jazz piano, classical piano, and blues piano are several examples. Once you become familiar with the piano’s basic playing techniques you can learn a specialized genre.

Obviously you need access to a piano to show yourself how to play it easily. Going the approach of buying a piano is a bit expensive (putting it mildly), but you don’t actually have to purchase a piano. There’ll often be schools, churches or clubs that have pianos available for practice.

Many resources exist online and elsewhere to help you learn to play piano. Piano DVDs, CDs and piano lesson books, as well as other methods are all good resources. You may get stuck at a particular part sometimes, so have another resource for instruction in case you don’t understand a lesson or are unable to apply it. If you’re learning piano online and this happens to you, look for a different website or simply find an acquaintance who knows piano technique and see if they can help you out.

Practice is the most important ingredient of any cultivation of musical talent, and lots of it. You need to have a regular practice regimen – no one can learn just by practicing only sporadically. The mind and hands have to be taught to do things they’re really not naturally accustomed to, such as associating musical notes with their keys on the piano, knowing the location of middle C, and where the musical alphabet lies in relation to the black piano keys. At least half an hour or so per day is usually enough practice time, and per week four or five days will be enough time to help you learn to play the piano.

Innate talent isn’t needed to learn to play piano, nor do you have to be extremely young. At its most fundamental, piano playing requires only simple abilities that everyone has the power to do. Most of piano playing, as well as other artistic hobbies, is a learned skill that takes more practice than inherent skill or talent to do

Learn to Play Piano Without Sheet Music

There is nothing more free-flowing to a piano player than sitting down on the bench, placing fingers on the keys and playing. No rhyme or reason is behind this form of playing. There is no sheet music in front of the piano player which guides that next note. That simply came from the piano player’s heart. Unfortunately not enough of this free style form of playing takes place. Here are a few things than you can do to play piano without relying on sheet music.

Learning to play piano without sheet music present requires an understanding of chord and music structure. A popular musical term is tertian harmony. This refers to the intervals of three that is all musical notes are an interval apart. All intervals are one note apart. For example C, D and E are all a musical note interval apart from one another. Tertian harmony therefore refers to all chords being three intervals apart. The C chord is based on C, E and G.

All chords consist of musical notes on a scale. The C scale is the major scale in the music world. A traditional C scale contains the following notes: C, D, E, F, G, A, B and C. From there you are able to determine to remaining chords in an interval. Adding chords to each set and determining whether it is a minor or major note is set by the scale.

Another popular chord in music is the F scale. The notes here are F, A, and C. Note that both the A and C notes appear on this scale and the C scale. Overlapping the F chord and C chord will produce a unique musical sound to your piano playing. Take it one step further by mixing up major and minor notes together. Be cautious about mixing G sharp with E flat. This may produce a delightful sound to you but to others it will appear that you have no clue about playing piano. A great chord combination is the G major chord or the D chord where you can play F sharp as a third interval.

In the musical world of piano playing, all chord scales reference the C scale. This is the starting point for beginner piano lessons. A basic C chord is displayed as C-1; D-2; E-3 and on from there.

Song structure consists of limited chords that play in a repetitive circle in conjunction with the main melody. Learn how to play the main scales of C, D, F and G first. As you polish these skills, you can build on the foundation from there. Interchange these scales with less popular ones to find a new mix of music. Try chord progressions of 1, 4, 5 and 4, 5, 1 as a starting point.

Master the art of chord progression and watch your piano playing options soar. Once you’ve learned how to match scale progression to music selection, your songs will take on a whole new life. From there you are on your way to playing without that sheet music.

With relative ease and almost no cost, anyone can establish an effective marketing campaign on the web that will give them access to many more students in their area. This has never before been the case, so it is important to take the time to know how it all works.

there are many other listing sites that you may want to check out. One of them, which is more specifically for private music teachers, is the music lessons directory. Exploring Different Styles of Music

Something that has been for the most part lost in today’s music listeners is a will to explore different styles of music. Many people will end up committing to one particular type of music and stick with it through thick and thin. The strange part about this is that there is more opportunity than ever to hear different music genres, but for some reason people have a bias towards what they know and are familiar with. Though it is nice to have a main style to pay attention to, you are missing out on a lot of great music by ignoring others.

Musical Opportunity in New Digital Media

Something very beneficial to all composers and makers of music has been going on as of late. The combination of the internet and decreasing costs of producing various forms of digital media has given rise to whole new areas of demand for music. This is obviously a good thing for the people who make it, but it does not necessarily mean that they will be able to find work and make a living by their art all of the sudden.

New art forms like web videos, visual music, video comics, flash animations, and so on all need music to complete their effects. Composers and producers should be able to step in and fill this void, but there are a few things working against them along with all of these benefits

How To Get Free Music Gear Through Product Endorsement Sponsorship

Need a new guitar, drum kit or amp? Your axe is trashed and want a new Les Paul? Got an amp on the fritz and want a new one from one of those fat cat music companies? You deserve to get free gear?… WRONG!!! Read on and I will inform you how to get endorsed but you may be in for a rude awakening.

The Benefit of Giving Away Music For Free

Anyone at all involved with music production and marketing will know that things have changed forever in the last few years, and continue to do so at what can be an alarming pace. People interested in selling their music face an uncertain market that seems to be still looking for the best method of dissemination considering problems like internet file sharing and illegal downloads.

What has become clear is that giving away music for free has to be at least part of a strategy for distributing music. Major artists frequently release free singles or even whole EPs to be downloaded by the masses. A few have even tried releasing their main albums for free or voluntary donations, with varying success. Sites have sprung up that offer free use music downloads or other similar campaigns, and there are sure to be more ideas coming into action every day.

How To Profit From Giving Away Free Music

If there is one thing clear about music and the internet, it’s that there are no clear options for distribution. Rather, there are hundreds of varied strategies that may work depending on who you are and what your situation is. Creativity and understanding of how the web works are the two things that will help you the most.

To most people the idea of releasing free to use music may sound unprofitable and wasteful, but when looking at the bigger picture it turns out to be a very smart move. There is no better way to spread your music than to release it for free. In most cases you wouldn’t be making much from selling it anyway. Just like in any business, you need to have a customer base before you can make any profit.

Responding to the Modern World in Composing New Music

The link between the arts and the environment in which art is produced has been firmly established over many centuries. The starting point for my work as both a composer and a researcher is my contention that for composers to contribute to the evolutionary continuum of music as a living, breathing art, their work must resonate with and reflect the modern world in which it is conceived.

This notion was the main motivation for me in returning to the art music world after nearly decades in which I was embroiled in Pop-related culture. And it has occupied a central role in all my work, particularly since early 2008, the period from which I have been content for my compositions not to be retrospectively withdrawn.

Music in Goa, India

Music like life and everything in it, is continuously evolving and music in Goa has been evolving just like anywhere else in the world, at times even spearheading the evolution with genre’s like ‘Goa Trance’ an internationally popular form of electronic music that originated in Goa in the 80′s. Goa has always been an inspiring environment for creative artistes from all over the world and I won’t be surprised if the next big thing in music comes right out of Goa.

With current trends I’m also sure that the next big thing would come out of a creative DJ’s electronic arsenal. I’ve been hearing things like ‘acoustic instruments can never be replaced’ for over a decade now. I’ve been hearing it mostly from musicians like me who play acoustic musical instruments.

How to DJ

One of the first steps in learning how to DJ is choosing your main music style. Most DJs will already have a definite idea of what music they will play as a high percentage of DJs started off their club life as one of the crowd, being a clubber. However, not everyone starts in this way, so before you learn how to DJ, settle on your main style.

To be a top DJ and love your DJing we highly recommend not comprising your music taste. Play music which inspires you, the music you feel would inspire clubbers and make them dance when they hear you DJ. If a DJ plays music they don’t love, their performance will not be half as good when they DJ in a club, not inspiring the clubbers around them, the people paying to hear them perform.
